Since i've been feeding the 14 yr old wet food, i don't feel her spine as acutely.
Is my cat too skinny if i can feel her spine. If they’re difficult to feel, you have an overweight cat. The vet said that she’s just a small breed, and this is how all of them are supposed to be. I can feel her spine when i stroke her, and she has lost a lot of weight recently.
Senior cats tend to lose the ability to digest and absorb their food well resulting in weight loss. If their ribs are very pronounced and easy to feel without pushing, it’s a sign that your cat could be underweight. Feeling your cat’s spine is another way to determine if they’re underweight.
There is a layer of muscle/fat between the spine and the skin, and if this layer is sufficient, the cat's spine should not be knobby. Of course, such muscle mass loss could also be related to your pet. Put her on the scale and she is ‘below average’.
You can see your cat’s spine and ribs, and you can feel the bones I've only seen it in older cats. Feel your cat's ribs (located behind their front legs);
A similar test is to run your hand along your cat’s spine and feel how pronounced the vertebrae are. My cat is so skinny i can feel her bones when she walks across my lap. Your cat may be getting old.
Rub your hands along your cat’s sides to feel their ribs. Feel around your cat’s spine again, you should be able to feel the bones, but not excessively. I haven't had many cats before in my life so i really don't have comparison.
